About us

The Bridge opened in May 2006 and is a celebrated example of modern design with excellent environmental credentials. Renewable materials have been used throughout its construction:  the timber frame is made from Wealden laminated chestnut and insulated with sheep’s wool and flaxto; the carpet is formed from recycled rubber tyres and the roof is planted with sedum.  The building runs on clean energy much of which is generated by the solar panels and (at the time of building) the largest array of photovoltaic cells in the South East of England.

A unique community centre, The Bridge is situated in Tressell Ward, an area of high deprivation.  Its existence is the result of the community’s effort to develop a needed facility and their determination to raise the required funding, to influence the design and to oversee the building project.
